You might ask "Why do you offer so few genetic tests?"
Our tests
are geared to be interesting, informative and useful for the casual user.
They are generally not geared to time sensitive or life and death
situations. New research and new scientific papers are being published
every day, but most of the newest research is on the deadlier and more
terrible genetic diseases! We are always looking for more and better tests
of general interest. If you have suggestions:
Contact Genesis Biolabs
There are a number of genetic tests available for
digestive and metabolic disorders, cancer risk factors and blood clotting
disorders. What do you do if you find that you have one of these?
Generally, the advice from your family doctor is: "Eat a healthier diet and
exercise more!" That advice really applies whether you have a genetic
disorder or not. We do not offer these genetic tests at Genesis Biolabs
primarily because we don't find them particularly useful, but they are
offered by many or our competitors.
For people who develop a blood clotting
disorder, the most effective Warfarin dose doctors should administer is
strongly influenced by variations in the CYP2C9 and VKORC1 genes. Without
this information, a doctor will try various doses over a few days before he
arrives at the optimal dose. Many companies are competing right now to
offer the most accurate Warfarin dosing tests. This kind of genetic test is
in a life and death, time sensitive area where Genesis Biolabs is not
currently trying to compete. If you want one of these Warfarin tests, they
are available from Nanosphere,
Clinical Data,
Kimball Genetics,
Genelex,
Laboratory Corporation of America,
Harvard Medical,
AutoGenomics and
Luminex Corporation. Probably others as well.
There are genetic tests for Narcolepsy, Cystic Fibrosis,
Fragile X syndrome, Tay-Sachs disease and many other largely untreatable
genetic disorders. Some are better understood than others and some have
experimental treatments that may prove effective eventually. These types of
genetic tests are most often used in prenatal screening. Genesis Biolabs
only offers mouth swab tests, not blood or amniotic fluid tests. We do not
offer tests applicable to prenatal screening.
Genesis Biolabs currently offers the following genetic tests:
Hereditary
Hemochromatosis Test - variations in the HFE gene affect iron
accumulation in the
blood. Easily treatable if caught early before damage has been done (30-40
years old).
Ruthlessness Gene Test - the AVPR1a promoter region impacts ones
tendency to be ruthless or altruistic.
Leprosy Susceptibility
Test - Variants in PARK2 and PACRG region are suspected leprosy risk
factors.
