It is possible to test for
relationships more remote than siblings.
Half-siblings, that share only 1 parent, match at about 9 markers
out of 36 (2 markers at each of 18 genetic loci), Cousins match at about
4.5 markers, etc. You can order a sibling test for two individuals that are
more distant than siblings. Based on how many matches and mismatches are
found we can estimate likely relationships.
Order a Sibling Test $99
You will receive 2 mouth swabs and collection tubes,
in a return package, along with specific instructions on how to collect the
samples. Results include a statement of most likely relationships between the two subjects
based on statistical analysis, as well as a detailed explanation
of the scientific data backing up the results. We can only provide a
statement of probability, not a definitive answer.
Here at Genesis Biolabs, we are always on the
lookout for improved DNA tests and additional unique markers. Hundreds of testable short tandem repeat markers have
been found in the human genome and thousands more probably exist. Adding
more markers can help.
With 128 markers, siblings would match at about 64 (95.8% between 53 and 75
matches), half-siblings at about 32, cousins at about 16. Such tests would
be more expensive than existing tests, but they may eventually become
available. Deep Ancestral
lineage can be tracked much further using DNA that is not a mixture
from both parents! Y-chromosome DNA is passed directly from father to son,
while mitochondrial DNA is passed directly from mother to child. Markers on
the Y-chromosome or mitochondria are not used in traditional forensic
testing because they do not provide a unique identification, many family
members share the same markers. They can be used to find genetic links
between distant relatives, with common ancestors hundreds of years in the
past!
